Climbing Equipment

From shoes and slings to carabiners and quickdraws; there’s a lexicon of climbing paraphernalia as long as a length of rope. Provided you know exactly what you’re doing, and provided you’ve got the right equipment, climbing is one of the finest ways to really ‘get to grips’ with the great outdoors!

The type of equipment you’ll need is obviously dependant on the type of climbing you’ll be undertaking. However, you won’t go far wrong with these essentials:

Helmet. Unlike climbing, it’s best to start at the top when selecting climbing equipment. The helmet is the essential starting point in any climber’s kit. Lightweight and fully ventilated, you’ll get all the protection you need, without having to endure a hot and heavy head!

Harness. Giving you absolute security and unrestricted movement, the harness is surely next on the must-have inventory. Whatever harness you favour, make sure it’s comfortable. Padded sections and ergonomic attachments will help ensure you’ll stay focussed on the climb, not your strap-lines no matter how long you’re hanging around!

Rope. Take extra special care of your climbing ropes; they could save your life. Lightweight ‘dynamic’ climbing ropes will break your fall smoothly and bring you to a gentle rest. Ropes may be single or double, depending on the nature of the climb.

Protection. Make things easy on yourself with a range of super safe extras: ranging from chalk to improve purchase on the rock face, through cams to protect cracks in the rock, to quickdraws to anchor your ropes.
